Therapy for social anxiety

Before going to see Alison, I was suffering from social anxiety and panic attacks. It got to the point in which, I rarely left the house and wouldn’t go into social situations. Doing the Thrive programme with Alison has been an eye opening experience. It was only once we began working through the book Thrive that I realised just how negative towards myself I could be, and what a detrimental impact this was having on my self esteem and confidence. Overcome trichotillomania (hair pulling)

My name is Megan Llewellyn, and from the age of 12 I have suffered with various mental health issues; the initial problem being trichotillomania. Trichotillomania is a disorder where you compulsively pull out your hair in order to relieve stress and anxiety, I have also suffered from depression and general anxiety, and the Thrive program has helped me to overcome them as well as make many other positive changes to my life.
Having been under the care of CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service) for a few years, I had managed to overcome the worst of my anxiety and depression, yet my hair pulling remained. Eventually my weekly therapy sessions became extremely frustrating to me, as I had no faith that CAMHS could help me with my trich since they had no success in the past 4 years of me being a patient. I was desperate to move on from therapy, and instead my family and I turned to the Thrive program for a different (and far more successful) approach.
Thrive has been a benefit to my whole family, we signed up for weekly skype meetings, and bought two of the thrive books to complete outside of the video calls. My parents completed the adult book and I completed the teenage book, and my mother was present during the meetings so she has directly benefitted by this as well. The thrive program is NOT therapy, and it works much differently to the CBT and IPT that I have had in the past. With the thrive program, we didn’t spend all meetings talking about my hair pulling, it was brought up but it wasn’t the main focus. Instead, we focused on my self esteem and the way I saw the world, this helped me cope better with so many issues in my daily life that I didn’t believe I could.
For example, I was very afraid of running into a certain person who goes to my college, and would panic if I saw them. I assumed that this was normal considering the fight we had, but after completing the thrive program I feel like I could handle any situation with them, even if they directly came up and talked to me. My confidence in college went up, and since I stopped comparing my achievements to my classmate’s I believe that my work has improved.
About halfway through the program I did end up shaving my head, simply because a lot of hair wasn’t growing back and any further pulling (intentional or unintentional) could lead to more damage. With my hair now short I cannot pull it out, but thanks to the thrive program I don’t feel the urge to do so in class or during normally stressful situations.
My family has seen a great improvement in my coping skills and attitude, and the whole family has benefited from the thrive program, and we work together to support each other. I would definitely recommend thrive to friends and family, even reading just the book can have a hugely positive impact on people’s lives; and is well worth the effort.

Overcome blushing

A huge ‘thank you’ to you Alison - a fabulous tutor with a very sensitive and empathetic approach. It was so fantastic to have someone listen to you and empathise, actually understanding why you can feel so powerless. Thrive is an eye opening course. In the space of a few weeks I reailsed that I was infact my own worst enemy and through changing the way I perceived situtations, myself etc, I learnt how to empower myself and take control of my thoughts.
The Dream technique is so simple and extremely effective, a technique that can be used anytime/anywhere. Once I understood the power of my imagination I began to use it to my advanctage instead of letting it take control of me.
I am now moving forward with my life - growing more confident by the day. I have actually applied to further my studies and become a speech and language therapist. I have interviews coming up and one even has a presentation - I will be going for it with everthing I’ve got and my blushing will not be holding me back!!!

Chronic fatigue and food phobia help

I had chronic fatigue, was very unhappy, thought very negatively and had a phobia of food. While I was on holiday in Thailand I tried pizza, prawns and the Indian food we were given on the plane! It is getting easier to try things and when I look at certain dishes now I think I’d like to try them instead of thinking they look awful. Thank you so much for all your help. A cure for emetophobia (fear of being sick)

Whilst searching the Internet for books for help with Emetophobia I came across the Rob Kelly Thrive self-help program. I was more than a little sceptical at first, thinking it would be just another one of those ‘self-help’ cure all books, but I was willing to give it a try, what did I have to lose?
So I downloaded the electronic version onto my Kindle and started to work through it. After a couple of weeks I noticed some changes in my behaviour and began to understand myself more. I’d also searched the Internet for more information regarding the Thrive program and it success rates. The general opinion was to work through the program with a trained Thrive consultant. I contacted Alison and arranged an appointment at her clinic in Loughborough.
Alison made me feel at ease and it felt easy to be open and honest with her without fear of being judged. Working through the Thrive program with Alison has made me realise just how negative I’d been thinking and how low my confidence and self-esteem were.
I cannot thank Alison enough for her guidance and encouragement. I would say to anyone who is suffering, please, please give this a try. It really does give you the foundations to take back control

Following illness, I had trouble with feeling nauseous in social and public situations. I would worry about this, which would heighten the feeling to the point it would affect me physically. I would get trapped in a vicious cycle, where my anxiety would heighten the feeling of nausea which would make me more anxious, and so on... It began starting to affect all parts of my life, making it difficult for me to spend time with friends and family or be fully active at work and even having to take days off. I found myself becoming more and more isolated as I withdrew myself from group situations.
Alison made me feel very comfortable and I felt I could be open about what I was thinking and feeling in a non-judgemental environment.
The Thrive program definitely started to change the way I was thinking straight away, I started to focus on the positive, boosting my self confidence, which meant I would focus less and less on my issues and actively keep them within my control. Within a few weeks I was able to start socialising with friends and going out again and start being like my old self. Each time helped me grow my confidence of being in a social setting without feeling I would be sick. I cannot really express how good I felt after being able to get through situations having participated and enjoyed them without feeling I would be sick! Thinking the right way really started changing my life in all areas for the better, I have become more outgoing and proactive.
The best thing for me, I know having gone through the program, having learnt a little more about myself, that if I should ever slip in to a negative or obstructive mindset again, I know I can get out of it and overcome my issues.

OCD therapy

I came to see Alison in January 2012 after a terrible period over Christmas battling with depression and OCD.
I had received CBT therapy for my OCD on the NHS in the past and although it helped slightly, I felt I needed something more in depth and tailored toward my specific problem which is why I decided to try hypnotherapy.
After my initial consultation, Alison recommended the Changing Limiting Beliefs course (now known as Thrive) for me rather than hypnotherapy and said that the course would last around 6 weeks which was welcome news as the way I was feeling, I was sure I would have to have therapy for months or even years, I was really at rock bottom.

I was initially a bit skeptical that this course could help in such a short space of time, how wrong I was!!! After the first session I immediately felt like a weight had been lifted, in sessions 2 and 3 I started to feel a real change as I began to realise that my situation could be changed, and that I had the power to change it! I had six one hour sessions in all over a period of six weeks, it’s hard to believe that I am feeling as good as I am now considering how low I felt when I first sought treatment, but I’m feeling great, and it’s all down to this fantastic course and the brilliant way in which Alison delivers it.

I can’t recommend Alison highly enough! She is the perfect therapist, she is very kind and caring and whilst she is sympathetic to your issues, she has a brilliant knack of moving you forward, stopping you from wallowing in your current situation, encouraging you to think to the future and how you want it to be.

I had the clb course for issues surrounding depression and OCD, but it will work for many other different issues as well. It basically equips you with a mental toolkit to help you control and even banish negative thoughts, it is something which will benefit you for the rest of your life.

It has helped hugely with my OCD and built up my confidence and self esteem which in turn got rid of my depression. For anybody like me who has considered this kind of therapy at length and um’d and ah’d about whether or not it will suit you, I say “just try it!” what have you got to lose? It only takes 6 short weeks and like me, you may be pleasantly surprised with the results!

I suffered from OCD for over 5 years with fear of almost everything. I was unable to go to the supermarket, shopping was a major trauma (so I simply ordered online) and slowly I became more and more reluctant to go outside preferring if possible to take the safe option of staying in my house as that meant that I didn’t have to face problems or clean everywhere when I returned. I strategically planned all trips before-hand mapping out any possible scenarios to fully prepare myself or went only to places I considered ‘safe’. I washed clothes at 60 degrees or higher to ensure I removed any contaminants (of course this meant clothes were discoloured and ruined!). My hands looked like those of a 90 year old due to the constant washing and my skin was terrible due to excessive showering. ‘What if’ was my favourite phrase and cleaning ‘just in case’ was part of my daily routine. Life was really bad and not just for me but for all of those around me.
I had tried CBT therapy and it wasn’t right for me. I simply wasn’t prepared to do some of the ‘exposure therapy’ (I wouldn’t have done those things even when I was well). I was desperate to find myself again (the person who loved life, enjoyed going out, was always busy and had lots of friends; things I had slowly lost as OCD gradually crept over me and took over my life) and then in a last ditch attempt I searched the internet for alternative options. That’s when I came across Alison and the Loughborough Hypnotherapy Clinic. Contacting Alison was the start of my new life and finding the ‘old me’. I don’t think Alison realises how much she has helped me and in turn those around me. I was sceptical when I arrived at my first session and didn’t really believe that something could work in such a short period (given all of the alternatives I had tried). How wrong was I! I started to see results within a couple of weeks and things just got better and better (don’t get me wrong – I did have set backs and it was hard but I worked through them, didn’t dwell on them and quickly learnt that we all have setbacks particularly when I was tired but I chose not to let them affect me and I chose to move on. Some things may still bother me but I have the techniques to put them in perspective).
Alison really is fantastic. She is non- judgemental and really helps to give you techniques to help you to regain your confidence in yourself and life. She works with you and doesn’t dwell on the ‘illness’ and this was important to me in my recovery. Alison helped me to change the way I was thinking. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy and even after my 10 sessions I am working on the techniques and apply them in my daily life but it was and is worth it. Every day my life really is getting better and better. My life has changed dramatically. I now go out to the supermarket. I enjoy going shopping and actually prefer to go to the stores rather than shop online. I enjoy doing new things. My hands are looking 100% better! I don’t shower excessively. I don’t wash clothes on temperatures higher than 40 (so all clothes are now looking good). I am rebuilding my life. I look back at some of the things I was doing and I genuinely can’t believe it...........why was I doing those things? Why was I choosing to waste my life, literally ‘washing’ my life away? I look at them and think “it was crazy to be doing that”, yet at the time it was absolutely necessary and normal to me. Not anymore I am happy to say!
I couldn’t have done this by working through the book alone. Alison is really wonderful and please if you have OCD or anxiety don’t live with the illness any longer. Contact Alison and give it a try, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I will still see Alison from time to time because I want to make sure that I keep on track as it is really important to me and my family to keep Thriving.

Stop obsessive thoughts

Having not felt myself after a virus and a long period of coping with a stressful situation, I then started to develop horrifying thoughts, which quickly flooded my mind to the point where I couldn’t sleep, socialise or work. Worried I was developing a serious mental illness and felt I could lose control at anytime, I contacted Alison, as I needed help urgently. The alternative was months off work waiting to see an NHS therapist. Assured I wasn’t losing my mind, Alison recommended the ‘Thrive’ programme and diagnosed anxiety along with obsessional thoughts.

I came to see Alison to seek help with intrusive and negative thoughts and to see if there was a way to combat these thoughts.
Over the sessions with Alison I did learn how to manage my thinking more clearly and how not to let the thoughts define me.
